What is it?
Botox relaxes a specific muscle for a few months. Where that muscle was creasing the skin every time you frowned or smiled, the crease softens. Where a jaw muscle had grown strong from clenching, the lower face gradually looks less square.
The skill is in the dose and the placement, not the quantity. We watch how your face actually moves before choosing units, and we would rather start low and add at your review than freeze an expression you use every day.

THE BOTOX GUIDE
How Botox actually works.
Botulinum toxin type A is a purified protein injected into a specific muscle to relax it. It was first used for medical conditions such as muscle spasm and migraine, and is now used in aesthetic medicine for facial rejuvenation, jaw slimming, body contouring and excessive sweating.

Before
The nerve releases acetylcholine, the messenger that tells a muscle to contract. The muscle contracts, and the skin above it creases.

The injection
Botox is absorbed into the muscle cells and blocks that release. Only the injected muscle is affected, not the ones beside it.

After
The muscle relaxes, tension drops and the skin above it smooths. The body absorbs the Botox gradually over about four to six months, and it can then be repeated.

SAFETY AND SUITABILITY
What you should know before you decide.
This is general information, not advice for you personally. Your doctor will go through it at your consultation and will ask about your health and your medicines before anything is agreed.
What we use
Allergan (Botox), Nabota, Neuronox, Aestox, Xeomin and MBtox. Every vial is opened in front of you.
What is normal afterwards
- Small red bumps and pinpoint bleeding at the injection points, which usually settle within an hour.
- Mild bruising, more likely around the eyes.
- A headache in the first day or two.
- Tenderness in the treated muscle for a few days.
Less common risks
- A drooping eyelid or brow, or uneven eyebrows. This is uncommon, it is temporary, and it wears off as the botox does.
- A smile or chewing that feels different if a nearby muscle is affected.
- Dry or watery eyes.
- Asymmetry, which can usually be corrected at your review.
Tell us, or wait, if any of these apply
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome or motor neurone disease.
- You have had an allergic reaction to botulinum toxin or to albumin before.
- There is an active skin infection where we would inject.
- You are taking aminoglycoside antibiotics, which can strengthen the effect. Tell us about every medicine you take.
Before your appointment
- Tell us if you take blood thinners, aspirin, fish oil or vitamin E. They make bruising more likely.
- Skip alcohol for 24 hours beforehand.
- Come with a clean face if you can, though we can remove make up here.
- You do not need to fast.
Afterwards
- Stay upright for four hours and do not lie face down.
- Do not rub or massage the treated area for 24 hours.
- No strenuous exercise, sauna or hot yoga for 24 hours.
- No facials or face massage over the area for two weeks.
- The effect starts at three to seven days and is complete at about two weeks. Judge the result then, not on the day.
Call us straight away if
- Difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking. Treat this as an emergency and go to the nearest hospital.
- A drooping eyelid or double vision.
- Muscle weakness that spreads beyond the area treated.
- Increasing pain, heat, pus or fever at an injection site.
