What is it?
The diode laser targets the pigment in the hair and heats the follicle enough to slow it down. Hair grows in cycles, so each session catches the follicles that happen to be active at that moment, which is why a course works and a single session cannot.
Your hair colour and skin tone decide the settings, so the first session starts conservatively and we build the energy up from there. It is safe for all skin types, but the plan is not the same for everyone.

Good to know
Do not wax or pluck the area between sessions, because the laser needs the root in place. Shaving is fine. Avoid strong sun on the treated area for a few days afterwards.

What we use
A diode laser with contact cooling, used at settings chosen for your skin tone and hair type after a patch test.
What is normal afterwards
- Redness and small raised bumps around each follicle for a few hours.
- A warm feeling like mild sunburn on the day.
- Hairs appearing to grow out over one to three weeks as they shed. This is normal, not regrowth.
Less common risks
- Blistering or a superficial burn. Uncommon, and the reason we patch test and cool the skin.
- Skin that goes darker or lighter than the surrounding area, more likely on tanned or deeper skin tones. Usually temporary.
- Folliculitis, small spots that look like a rash, for a few days.
- Paradoxical hair growth, which is rare and is discussed if it applies to you.
Tell us, or wait, if any of these apply
- You are pregnant. We ask you to wait, as a precaution rather than because harm is proven.
- You have taken isotretinoin (Roaccutane) in the last six months.
- You are on medication that makes you sensitive to light, including some antibiotics and St John's wort.
- You have tanned, sunbathed or used fake tan in the last two weeks.
- There is an active infection, cold sore, open wound or tattoo in the area.
Before your appointment
- Shave the area the day before. Do not wax, pluck or thread for four weeks beforehand, as the laser needs the root.
- No sunbathing or self tan for two weeks.
- Come with clean skin, no deodorant for underarms, no lotion or make up on the area.
Afterwards
- Cool the area with a cold compress if it feels hot.
- No hot showers, sauna, swimming pools or gym for 48 hours.
- SPF 50 daily on any exposed area, for the whole course.
- No scrubs, retinoids or acids on the area for three days.
- Do not pluck or wax between sessions. Shaving is fine.
Call us straight away if
- Blistering, crusting or broken skin.
- Pain that is getting worse after the first day.
- Spreading redness, pus or fever.
